ATA Carnet
A Passport for goods
to Travel for Business.
An ATA Carnet is a customs document that facilitates the temporary import or export of goods without the obligation to pay taxes or duties. It is also referred to as a Merchandise Passport or Passport for Goods, whether the items are shipped or hand-carried. It covers a wide range of goods and merchandise, including commercial samples, professional equipment, and items intended for use at trade shows and exhibitions.
ATA Carnet Information
ATA Carnet helps you speed through customs with duty and tax-free permits for temporary export and import of goods in over 80 countries/customs territories. However, it does not cover consumable or disposable items and is not recommended for situations where products taken abroad may be sold in a foreign country. Nevertheless, the ATA Carnet is particularly beneficial when a product is expected to travel to multiple countries before being returned to the United States. ATA Carnets are valid for up to one year, with the possibility of a one-year extension, provided that the inventory remains unchanged.
ATA Carnet is not recommended for goods intended for sale. If any of the goods are sold, the ATA Carnet will incur a penalty equal to 10% of the duties and taxes owed, in addition to the payment of the applicable duties and taxes for the sold items.
